Vaccines are key to staying healthy. The Chatham County Health Department, located at 1395 Eisenhower Drive in Savannah, and the Glynn County Health Department, located at 2747 Fourth Street in Brunswick, offer travel immunization services and information on staying healthy while traveling outside of the United States.
It is important to plan ahead. Most vaccines require about 15 to 30 days to provide full protection. Routine vaccines such as Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Influenza, as well as Typhoid vaccines, are available on a walk-in basis in Chatham County and by appointment in Glynn County.
Yellow Fever Vaccine
Yellow fever vaccine is available by appointment only and only at the Chatham County Health Department. If you are under care for a chronic health condition or over the age of 60, please consult your physician and confirm in writing your eligibility to receive the yellow fever vaccine.
Currently, the only yellow fever vaccine licensed in the United States is unavailable due to production delays by the manufacturer, Sanofi Pasteur. With approval from the United Stated Food and Drug Administration’s Investigational New Drug (IND) program, we are able to offer an accepted alternative vaccine which is comparable in safety and effectiveness, called Stamaril. Stamaril is not licensed in the United States. The vaccine is not new and has been used for a long time. According to the CDC, “IND is the mechanism through which FDA gives approval for Stamaril to be imported.”
Yellow Fever Consent Forms
Under this FDA program, anyone travelling to countries requiring yellow fever vaccine or wishing to receive the vaccine, is encouraged to review and complete the age-appropriate consent forms prior to arriving for their appointment. Please note that both the Assent form and Parent/Guardian Consent form must be completed for a child age 7-17.
