September is National Preparedness Month and there is no better time to make sure that you and your family are ready for possible disasters or emergencies so you can protect your legacy.
Building an emergency kit is key to preparing for whatever might head your way. The kit should be stocked with items that will allow you to survive on your own for several days. Some essential items for your kit include:

What if a disaster happens and you’re not with your family? Make a plan that will include communication, evacuation, sheltering strategies. Having a plan in place will go a long way toward peace of mind should something unexpected happen.
Prepare your kids for disasters and emergencies. Take time to make a plan and have conversations about preparedness. Help them know how to stay safe and navigate potentially scary situations. Disasters can leave children and teens feeling frightened, confused and insecure. Their responses can be quite varied. It’s important to not only recognize these reactions, but also help children cope with their emotions.
Don’t forget your four-legged family members! It’s always a good idea to plan ahead for pets. Make sure they are up-to-date on vaccinations and have a collar with ID, including your contact information. If you have to evacuate with your pet, make sure you have a leash, medications, and grooming items.
