Teens: Got Skills?

Being healthy is about more than just keeping away germs or eating your vegetables. To be healthy inside and out, you also need important life skills and plenty of opportunities for character development. Here are a few of the ways the Coastal Health District can help.

Coastal Health District Teen Peer Counselors (TPCs)
The Teen Peer Counselors are our public health ambassadors for our District Youth. Mentored & trained by our Teen Health Educator, Mr. George Johnson, the TPCs are taught to inform other teens about the advantages associated with and reasons for being abstinent from risky behaviors. They conduct skits & role-playing and host group education sessions, one-on-one talks and workshops. The sessions are based on knowledge and statistical data from national, state and local sources regarding teen health issues. Topics covered: dealing with peer pressure, stress, self-esteem, health issues, relationships, communication skills, morals & values. Call 912.484.0110 or email George Johnson.

Connect With Kids Character Education
Connect With Kids is a partnership with Savannah College of Art & Design's Bees Leadership Council, and provides student athletes as mentors for middle schoolers. This video-based curriculum teaches 26 character traits (i.e. Caring/Compassion, Citizenship, Justice/Fairness, Perseverance, Self-Control, Tolerance, etc.), each with a guided discussion and activity session. These sessions are designed to be an hour long. To find out more about the program, contact Cristina Gibson at 912-644-5209, or send her an email.

P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing the Incidence of Driver Error)
P.R.I.D.E. is a 2-hour class for both teens & parents, teaching about the new requirements of Joshua's Law (in effect January 1, 2007) and how to be safer drivers by staying off cell phones, wearing seatbelts, not drinking & driving, etc.

Read more at the P.R.I.D.E. website. Find out when a class will be offered near you by contacting Cristina Gibson at 912-644-5209, or by sending her an email.
