"Let's Dance, Savannah!" on Feb. 27

February 5, 2010 - Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie your way to better health during the Let's Dance, Savannah! event from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, in the Center Court at Savannah Mall. The day of dance demonstrations and classes is being offered free of charge to encourage dance as a legitimate form of exercise and to teach people about the importance of cardiovascular health.

"Using dance as a means of exercise is a great way to get in shape and have fun all at the same time," said Cristina Gibson, Director of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for the Coastal Health District and event coordinator.

Free healthy snacks, blood pressure checks, bone density scans, body mass index measurements, and blood glucose testing will also be offered. Funding for Let's Dance, Savannah! is being provided by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

The event will feature performances and instruction by Rebecca Haas, USA Dance/Moon River Dancers, Savannah Tango, Silver Liners, Abundant Life Worship Center Dance Ministry, Maxine Patterson's School of Dance, Savannah Children's Theatre, and Abeni Cultural Arts.
In addition, participants will have the chance to win an iPod Shuffle and iTunes gift card.*
*(Participants must be present at the end of the event to be eligible to win).

According to the Georgia Department of Community Health, Division of Public Health cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Georgia; however, regular exercise, a healthy diet, and controlling your blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk.

"Let's Dance, Savannah! is a great opportunity for people to learn a few new dance steps, get some exercise and learn more about their own health," said Gibson. "We hope people of all ages will come out and take advantage of this event."
