News: Health Departments Celebrate "Read Across America Day"
February 29, 2008
A healthy body needs a healthy mind, and that’s why the Coastal Health District will encourage children to read as part of the 10th annual National Education Association's “Read Across America Day” on March 3rd.
On that day, volunteers will be reading to children in the waiting room of the Glynn County Health Department’s clinic at 2747 Fourth Street from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., and the Chatham County Health Department's Midtown clinic at 1602 Drayton Street from 3:30 - 5 p.m. Children will also receive free bookmarks and certificates. “Read Across America Day,” falls the day after Dr. Seuss's 104th birthday, and national organizers expect more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.
“We are excited to be a part of this special celebration of reading,” says Karen Terry, Youth Development Coordinator for the Coastal Health District. “We hope exposing children to the joy of books now can help turn them into life-long readers.”
