News: Health Department Advises Flea Hill Residents to Boil Water

August 29, 2008
CAMDEN COUNTY, GA – Due to flooding in the Flea Hill area, including Spring Hill Circle, Spring Hill Court, and Flea Hill Place, the Camden County Health Department is urging residents to take extra precautions to avoid contaminated water (especially those with private wells that have flooded).

Contaminated water is not safe to drink; therefore, residents in the effected areas are advised to boil water before use. Bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute will kill most organisms.

If residents do not have the means to boil water, it is recommended that they disinfect water by adding eight drops (about 1/8 teaspoon) of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and letting it stand for 30 minutes. If the water is cloudy after 30 minutes, the procedure should be repeated. Use a container that has a cap or cover for disinfecting and storing water to be used for drinking. Bottled water is also recommended, especially for mixing baby formula.

It is also recommended that:
* Any food that has come into contact with flood waters be discarded.
* Children stay away from standing or moving water.
* Anyone coming into contact with flood waters thoroughly rinse any exposed body parts with soap and sanitized or disinfected water.
* Residents continue to follow basic hygiene procedures such as hand washing.
