Coastal Health District Encourages Parents and Teens to Communicate Openly about Sexuality During "Let's Talk Month"
October 17, 2011 - Having "The Talk" with teenagers has never been easy. But in today's society of Internet blogs and social websites where misinformation is rampant, getting the real facts out to teens is more important than ever.
The month of October is Let's Talk Month and the Coastal Health District, along with Advocates for Youth, will host community events in Chatham County that support parents in their efforts to talk to their children openly and honestly about relationships and sexuality. The sessions will be held in conjunction with Beach High School, West Broad Street YMCA, and 100 Black Men of Savannah.
"Let's Talk Month emphasizes the importance of a strong partnership between the community and the family in helping young people develop responsible and positive attitudes about sexuality," said Christina Bolton, Coastal Health District Adolescent Health and Youth Development Coordinator.
The Let's Talk gatherings are designed to provide an opportunity for parents and teens to ask questions and discuss issues with other families. Advocates for Youth champions efforts that help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates believes it can best serve the field by boldly advocating for a more positive and realistic approach to adolescent sexual health.
"We want both parents and teens to feel comfortable asking the tough questions," said Bolton. "That's what Let's Talk Month is all about - starting the dialogue."
