The purpose of World Breastfeeding Week is to raise breastfeeding awareness by providing education on the benefits of breastfeeding and help make breastfeeding the normal choice for women. Children who breastfeed receive important nutrients and antibodies that help protect them from a host of diseases. In addition, breastfeeding has been proven to reduce the risk of obesity, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), childhood diabetes, and colic.
