Camden, Glynn and McIntosh County Health Departments Now Offering Free Vaccines

August 23, 2010 - Health departments in Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh counties are now offering certain vaccines free of cost to adolescents and adults. The vaccine is being provided through funding by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The ARRA has provided the resources needed to offer a free dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDAP) vaccine to all aged 11 to 64 regardless of insurance coverage. The funding also provides for six other vaccines for adults 19 and over at no cost regardless of insurance coverage including Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Pneumococcal (pneumonia), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines are also available for those that meet certain criteria.

Adolescents that do not have insurance that covers vaccines will be able to receive free doses of TDAP, HPV, Meningococcal, and Varicella (chicken pox) vaccines with no out-of-pocket cost.

All of the available vaccines help protect against potentially dangerous and in some cases, life-threatening, diseases.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to offer several potentially lifesaving vaccines free of charge," said Diane Weems, M.D., Coastal Health District Chief Medical Officer. "I encourage the citizens of Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh counties to get these vaccines. It will help protect you and your loved ones."

Money for the vaccines is being made available to health departments around the country through ARRA funds in an effort to help improve the immunization rates among teens and adults.
