Hot Topic: National Nutrition Month
This year in the United States, more than 1.4 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer and over 500,000 Americans will die of cancer. An estimated 32% of these deaths may be related to diet. Fruit and vegetable intake is an important part of a healthy diet that may reduce risk of cancer. Studies also show that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been associated with the prevention of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the US. You should aim for five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Try putting something of every color on your plate or in your lunch bag to eat the recommended servings of vegetables and fruit. The more reds, oranges, greens, yellows, and blues you see on the plate, the more health promoting properties you are getting from you fruit and vegetable choices.
