Hot Topic: Fresh Produce at Your County Health Department

This summer the Georgia WIC Farmers’ Market will be in full swing at your neighborhood County Health Department. This farmers’ market allows Georgia families, who participate in the health department’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, to get free locally grown produce. The produce can also be purchased by the general public.

Income-eligible WIC participants are given coupons that can be used to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables directly from WIC approved farmers. WIC approved farmers must grow the majority of their crops in the state of Georgia.

“This is a great way to provide healthy foods to our clients and the community, while supporting our Georgia farmers,” said Jo Manning, Nutrition Services Coordinator with the Coastal Health District. “We hope that not only WIC participants, but everybody will take advantage of the opportunity to buy produce directly from a farmer who we know grows fruits and vegetables in the state."
