Hot Topic: Dance For Your Health

This Saturday, the Coastal Health District is sponsoring a dance celebration during the 2007 National Day of Dance for Cardiovascular Health. The event is part of a nation-wide campaign to encourage dancing as exercise, and an opportunity to teach people about the importance of cardiovascular health.
“For too many people, exercise feels like a chore,” says Cristina Gibson, Director of Health Promotion for the Coastal Health District. “We all know we should exercise, but it can be hard to stay motivated to climb onto a treadmill. Add a busy schedule, and exercise often gets marked off the ‘to do’ list.”
But dancing can be a lot of fun – and a great form of exercise. “If you’re feeling burned out on the traditional exercise routines, start dancing,” Gibson says. “You get your heart rate up, your body moving, but it doesn’t feel like hard work. It feels like fun.”
Heart disease is the number one killer of American women. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 500,000 women die each year of cardiovascular disease. But regular exercise, a healthy diet, and controlling your blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk.
That’s why the Coastal Health District is sponsoring a Day of Dance event Saturday, February 24th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Savannah Mall’s Center Court. The celebration will feature performances by The STUDIO Company, Savannah Children’s Theatre, Moon River Dancers, Savannah Argentine Tango, The Lotus Dance Company, The Savannah Shag Club, A.W.O.L. (All Walks of Life), Memorial’s Fitness One Hip-Hop Group, The Gretchen Greene Dancers, and the Coastal Health District’s Teen Peer Counselors.
The event will also include blood pressure screenings by the Community Cardiovascular Council, information on the signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attack, healthy snacks, Body Mass Index Measurements, and a blood drive through the Savannah Community Blood Bank. Visitors will also receive details about dance opportunities through Savannah’s network of dance organizations.
